Hi everybody. We’ll read Kaitlyn Greenidge’s novel We Love You, Charlie Freeman next week. Then on October 18, we’ll attend Greenidge’s reading at QC instead of having class that week. It’s going to be exciting. In class, we’ll practice asking good questions of living authors–a good skill to have!
We’ll read some of W.E.B DuBois’s classic book The Souls of Black Folk (1903) along with Greenidge’s novel. You’ll see that DuBois’s book is an explicit part of her novel’s plot. I think you’ll also see that DuBois’s ideas–especially his argument about “double consciousness”–resonates with Ellison’s Invisible Man (and other texts we’ve read).
